Multi-gap design has been verified to be a very effective way to reduce the magnetic core loss. Various types of core geometry of the housing
core in low-loss power ferrite materials are applicable to the multi-gap framework by ACME. There are some key merits to be emphasized as follows, 1. Core loss reduction
2. Size reduction if using heterogeneous core materials
3. Direct integration into the process flow of wire-wound components
4. High reliability by ACME’s assembly technology
Flux fringing effect around the gap
Flux fringing effect around the core gap on the winding coil surrounded is normally the root cause resulting abnormal thermal issue on the
components. It might lead to burn-out problem with the insulation layer of the wire. By using the multi-gap design, it can significantly reduce the fringing effect. The following flux simulations done by FEMM 4.2 show how the multi-gap works.
